What's Interesting About This Concert

  • Carla Ecker has been the concertmaster of the Rogue Valley Symphony for seven years, starting her tenure in 2017

  • Brahms himself declared that the symphony, from sketches to finishing touches, took 21 years, from 1855 to 1876.

  • Johannes Brahms eventually composed a First Symphony that makes countless references to Beethoven. When people remarked about his 4th movement tune that resembles the Ode to Joy, he said, “Every jackass notices that!”

  • Between 1965 and 1977 the first movement was used as the opening and closing theme for BBC TV series Going for a Song. The music played along with the sound of a bird in a cage automaton.
