Join us as we wrap you in surprise discoveries and playful connections. Our concerts will be intriguing and fun, while reminding you of music you love and revealing music you can love. Browsing through the brochure, I hope you agree on both accounts. Presenting our embarrassment of riches, we begin with the Gershwin Centennial Celebration.

Our August concert features the Rhapsody in Blue and includes a newly co-commissioned piece by Peter Boyer of Ellis Island fame. We are one of 50 states presenting Rhapsody in Red, White and Blue. Both pieces feature favorite Jeffrey Biegel on piano.

The applause meter will go off the charts with three returning soloists: Anne-Marie McDermott, Bella Hristova and Nancy Zhou. They are among the best received artists we have ever had. New soloists to the Rogue Valley are trumpet player Mary Elizabeth Bowden and pianist George Li. Both have become stars, and will be bringing their bravura and mastery that has already earned them accolades on global stages. I have no doubts that they will win you over too.

The orchestra will be featured in the Czech program that has been on my mind for a long time. Usually, you only hear Vltava (Moldau) from My Country. That leaves a lot of great music on the table! We are presenting three symphonic poems from Smetana’s magnum opus, plus the, “New World Symphony” by Dvořák.

Last but not least, I am excited to welcome our first-ever Composer in Residence! David Ludwig is a superb award-winning composer, who serves as Dean of Music at The Juilliard School. I cannot think of a more gifted music communicator. Ludwig’s presence will elevate our season to a whole new level.

I am eager to see you in the concert hall and share all this beautiful music with you. Secure your seats at your favorite hall today.

Warmly,
Martin Majkut, Music Director

RVS celebrates the centennial of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with pioneering pianist Jeffrey Biegel, featuring the iconic work by Gershwin and Peter Boyer’s Rhapsody in Red, White & Blue to mark the occasion.

Following the triumphant performance of Peter Boyer’s Ellis Island in 2021, RVS will stage the west coast premiere of Boyer’s new Rhapsody in Red, White, & Blue. In recent years, Boyer’s profile as a “go-to composer” for American subject matter in the classical music world has risen ever higher. He is one of the most frequently performed American orchestral composers of his generation. Don’t miss his tribute to Gershwin in this exciting new work!
